Boryspil is among the oldest cities in Ukraine, situated in the Kyiv Oblast about 35 kilometers east of the capital's center. First mentioned in chronicles in 1154 as Lto-Kyrylo, the city’s current name emerged in the 16th century. For centuries, it functioned as a strategic defensive outpost for Kyiv, frequently targeted during nomad raids and conflicts involving the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Russian Empire. The town evolved into a significant regional trade center during the 19th century. Its most transformative period began in the 1960s with the establishment of Boryspil International Airport, which today serves as Ukraine's primary aviation hub. This development turned the city into a crucial logistics and industrial zone, supporting the national economy. Beyond aviation, Boryspil is home to substantial food processing and construction material industries. With a population exceeding 60,000, it remains a vital transportation artery and a historical gateway to the Kyiv region, preserving landmarks that testify to its medieval origins.
