Nizhyn is located in the Chernihiv region on the Oster River, representing a city with an extraordinary legacy in education and trade. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Nizhyn stood as one of the most prominent cities of Left-bank Ukraine, largely due to a large Greek merchant community attracted by privileges granted by the Cossack Hetmans. These traders transformed the city into a major regional commercial hub. A defining moment in its history was the founding of the Gymnasium of Higher Sciences in 1820, where the world-renowned writer Nikolai Gogol studied; the building now serves as the Nizhyn State University. The city is also famous for its rich religious architecture, notably the five-domed St. Nicholas Cathedral built in 1658, a masterpiece of Ukrainian Baroque. A unique local symbol is the Nizhyn cucumber, a specific variety cultivated since the 18th century, which is celebrated with its own dedicated monument.
