Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi is a historically rich city in the Cherkasy Oblast of central Ukraine, situated on the banks of the Ros River. Founded in 1032 by Yaroslav the Wise as a fortress to protect Kyiv, the city features nearly a millennium of history. During the Khmelnytsky Uprising, it was the site of the 1648 Battle of Korsun, where Cossack forces achieved a decisive victory over the Polish army. The city gained worldwide fame for the Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi Pocket in 1944, an encirclement operation during WWII often referred to as 'Little Stalingrad on the Dnieper'. An architectural highlight is the Lopukhin-Demydov estate and park complex, located on an island in the Ros River, which now functions as a historical museum. In 1944, the city's name was augmented to honor the Ukrainian national poet Taras Shevchenko, who was born nearby. Today, it serves as a significant cultural center with numerous monuments and museums dedicated to both WWII history and regional heritage. Its scenic location on the rocky shores of the Ros River also makes it a popular destination for nature and history enthusiasts.
