Mhar Monastery (Ukraine)

Weather…

Mhar Monastery (Mharskyi monastyr) stands majestically on a hill overlooking the Sula River near Lubny. Founded in 1619 by Isaia Kopynsky with the patronage of Princess Raina Wisniowiecka, it became a major center of Orthodox spirituality in Ukraine. The architectural jewel of the complex is the Transfiguration Cathedral, completed in 1694. This seven-domed structure is a masterpiece of Ukrainian Baroque, showcasing intricate brickwork and balanced proportions that define the regional architectural identity of the era. Throughout its history, the monastery served as a vital cultural hub, maintaining a vast library and a printing press. It was a favorite pilgrimage site for Cossack Hetmans and even Russian Tsars. Following the 1917 revolution, the monastery was closed by the Soviet authorities and repurposed as a military camp and prison. It was returned to the church in 1993, and since then, extensive restoration work has returned the site to its former glory. The best time to visit is during the spring months when the monastery's extensive orchards are in bloom. Located just off the M03 highway between Kyiv and Kharkiv, it is an accessible stop for travelers. Visitors should explore the ornate bell tower and the peaceful monks' cells. The monastery shop has local honey, herbal teas, and traditional handicrafts, reflecting the daily labors of the resident brotherhood.
