Lubny is located in the Poltava region on the steep banks of the Sula River and stands as one of the oldest cities in Ukraine, with its founding traced back to 988 by Grand Prince Vladimir the Great. As a former border fortress of Kievan Rus defending against nomadic steppe tribes, Lubny possesses a deep military legacy. In the 17th century, the city served as the capital of the vast private estates of the Wisniowiecki family before becoming a Cossack regimental center following the Khmelnytsky Uprising. A nearby spiritual and architectural jewel is the Mgarsky Transfiguration Monastery, established in the 17th century in the Ukrainian Baroque style. During the 18th century, Lubny emerged as a pioneer in pharmaceuticals after the establishment of a specialized medicinal herb garden. Today, the city is a significant center for the food and textile industries, maintaining its historic charm through preserved architecture and lush parks.
