Mharsky Monastery Lubny (Ukraine)

Weather…

The Mharsky Monastery near Lubny is one of Ukraine's most significant Orthodox shrines, with its founding dating back to 1619 by Isaia Kopynsky, supported by a grant from Raina Mohylianka. The centerpiece of the monastery is the monumental Transfiguration Cathedral, built between 1682 and 1694 under the patronage of Hetmans Ivan Samoylovych and Ivan Mazepa. Its architecture blends Ukrainian Baroque elements with classical influences, featuring seven domes and rich stucco decoration. Historically, the monastery was a major spiritual and cultural center of Left-bank Ukraine, operating a printing house and maintaining an extensive library. In 1654, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Athanasius III Patelarus, passed away here, and his relics were kept in the monastery for a long time. After decades of neglect during the Soviet era, the complex was returned to the church in the 1990s and has since undergone comprehensive restoration.
