Nikopol is located on the right bank of the Dnieper River along the Kakhovka Reservoir and has a history reaching back to the Scythian era. The surrounding region is renowned for archaeological finds of Scythian gold, particularly from the Chertomlyk kurgan located nearby. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the settlement known as Nikitin Rig served as a strategic stronghold for the Zaporozhian Cossacks, acting as a site for several of their councils. The modern city was officially established in 1782 and grew into a major river port and commercial hub during the 19th century. Under the Soviet Union, Nikopol was developed into one of the world's largest centers for manganese ore mining and steel pipe production. The Nikopol Ferroalloy Plant remains a key industrial asset in the region's economy. Despite its heavy industrial focus, the city maintains monuments celebrating its Cossack heritage and historical significance in the defense of the southern territories. Its position on the reservoir continues to provide logistical advantages for large-scale shipping and manufacturing.
