Volodymyr is one of Ukraine's oldest and most historically significant cities, located in the Volyn Oblast near the Polish border. Founded in 988 AD by Prince Volodymyr the Great, it served for centuries as the capital of the powerful Galicia-Volhynia Principality. As a major political and religious hub of Eastern Europe, it features the magnificent 12th-century Assumption Cathedral, a masterpiece of medieval architecture. The city was a key trade link between East and West, receiving Magdeburg city rights as early as 1324. Throughout its long history, Volodymyr was ruled by the Kievan Rus, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Russian Empire. In 2021, the city officially reverted to its original name, Volodymyr, dropping the 'Volynskyi' suffix added during the Soviet era. Today, it is a center for food processing and light industry, while remaining a premier archaeological and tourist site. Visitors are drawn to its ancient earthen ramparts, historic monasteries, and the sense of deep history that permeates its streets, making it a cornerstone of Ukrainian national heritage.
