Drohobych is located in the Lviv region of western Ukraine and is historically inseparable from salt production, which began as early as the 13th century. During the Middle Ages, the city was a significant center of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia and later became an administrative hub of the Ruthenian Voivodeship within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. An outstanding witness to this era is the wooden St. George's Church from the 15th century, now a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its exquisite interior murals. In the late 19th century, Drohobych experienced rapid economic growth following the discovery of oil and ozokerite in the nearby Boryslav area, transforming it into the heart of the Galician oil industry. The city is also famous as the birthplace of writer Bruno Schulz, whose literary works immortalized the local atmosphere of the interwar period. Today, the urban landscape blends Gothic religious architecture with the ornate villas of oil barons from the turn of the century.
