Chernivtsi, the historic center of Bukovina, is situated on the Prut River and is regarded as one of Ukraine's most architecturally significant cities. The city flourished in the 19th century under Austro-Hungarian rule, earning the nickname 'Little Vienna' for its grand architecture and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Chernivtsi was a cultural melting pot where Ukrainians, Romanians, Jews, Germans, and Poles coexisted peacefully. Its most iconic landmark is the Residence of Bukovinian and Dalmatian Metropolitans, now home to the university and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city is also famous as the birthplace of renowned literary figures such as Paul Celan. Its urban landscape is defined by magnificent Historicist and Secessionist buildings that remain remarkably well-preserved. Despite the turbulent history of the 20th century, Chernivtsi has maintained its multicultural charm and its role as a key educational and cultural hub in southwestern Ukraine.
