Chervonohrad, officially renamed Sheptytskyi in 2024, is a major industrial hub in the Lviv Oblast, situated along the Western Bug River. Founded in 1692 by Polish magnate Feliks Kazimierz Potocki as Krystynopol, it was named after his wife Kristina and served as a grand residence for the Potocki family. The city was a center of Polish culture and religion for centuries, home to a magnificent Baroque palace and a Basilian monastery. Its history took a sharp turn in 1951 following a territory exchange between Poland and the Soviet Union; it was renamed Chervonohrad and developed as a primary coal-mining center. The surrounding Lviv-Volhynia coal basin transformed the town into a bustling industrial city with a focus on energy production. In September 2024, the Ukrainian parliament officially renamed the city Sheptytskyi to honor Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, as part of the nation's de-communization efforts. Today, with a population of about 65,000, the city balances its mining legacy with a renewed focus on cultural heritage, preserving its 18th-century architectural monuments while navigating the transition to a modern economy.
