Lutsk is one of the oldest and most historical cities in Ukraine, serving as the administrative center of the Volyn Oblast. First mentioned in 1085, it was the capital of the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia during the Middle Ages. The city's primary landmark is Lubart's Castle, one of Ukraine's best-preserved 14th-century medieval fortresses. Lutsk was a major cultural and religious hub where various denominations and ethnic groups coexisted for centuries. In 1429, the city hosted the famous Congress of European Monarchs, where rulers discussed the defense against the Ottoman Empire. The old town features numerous churches and monasteries, including the notable St. Peter and Paul Cathedral. Today, Lutsk is a key industrial center, particularly in vehicle manufacturing and food processing, and stands as a significant educational hub in northwestern Ukraine.
