💡 Tips

  • Visit Saýat in autumn to see the 'white gold' harvest on the endless cotton fields along the Amu Darya.
  • Be discreet when photographing the cotton harvest; always ask the locals for permission first.
  • Use the city as a gateway to explore the Amudarya biosphere reserves in the wider area.
  • Prepare for a very traditional and conservative way of life in this rural region.
  • Drink only bottled water, as water quality in agricultural areas can often be problematic.

Saýat is an agricultural town on the right bank of the Amu Darya in Lebap Region, about 50 kilometres south-east of Türkmenabat. It has around 25,000 inhabitants and is the centre of a fertile irrigation district where cotton, wheat, rice and melons are grown. For centuries the area belonged to the sphere of influence of the Emirate of Bukhara and was incorporated into the Russian Governorate-General of Turkestan after the conquest of the 1880s. Saýat sits immediately beside one of the major crossings of the Garakum Railway, a modern line opened in 2014 that connects southern Turkmenistan directly with Lebap Region. The town itself hosts a cotton ginning factory, a large agricultural bazaar and several small food processing plants supplying the surrounding district economy.
