💡 Tips
- Ensure you have all necessary border permits before traveling to this sensitive region near Uzbekistan.
- Avoid taking photographs of industrial facilities or border posts, as this is strictly monitored.
- Observe the water levels of the Amu Darya; the riverbank landscape changes dramatically depending on the season.
- Use early morning hours for exploring, as the summer heat in this 'gas oasis' can be extreme.
- Expect basic accommodations, as the city primarily caters to gas industry workers and transit travelers.
🍽 Food
Look for small riverbank cafes that serve fresh catfish or carp, deep-fried until crispy.
The local version is often cooked with cottonseed oil, giving the rice a rich, nutty flavor.
This region is famous for its massive, honey-sweet melons sold directly at the field edges.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A lively spot where textiles and household goods from both Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are traded.
Buy high-quality, locally produced cotton fabrics directly from small shops in the center.
Watch the sunset over the mighty river; the silence here is a sharp contrast to the industrial zones.
Small strips of forest along the river offer shade and the chance to spot rare birds.

Gazojak is a small town in the north of Lebap Region, about 100 kilometres north of Türkmenabat and just a few kilometres from the Uzbek border. With around 18,000 inhabitants, it grew up in the 1960s as a settlement for natural gas workers around the great Naip gas field. The name Gazojak roughly means gas flame in Turkmen. Today the town lives almost entirely from the gas sector: the strategic Central Asia-Centre pipelines towards Russia start nearby, as does the Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan-Kazakhstan-China gas line, whose first compressor stations are located in the vicinity. The Türkmenabat-Daşoguz railway, a feat of Soviet desert engineering, also passes through the town. Despite the harsh climate, Gazojak remains a vital supply hub for the northern region.
