Seýdi is a modern industrial city on the right bank of the Amu Darya in Lebap Region, about 80 kilometres north-west of Türkmenabat. It has around 30,000 inhabitants and was renamed in 1990 in honour of the classical Turkmen poet Seýitnazar Seýdi (1775-1836); previously it was called Neftezavodsk, literally Oil Plant City. The town was founded in the 1970s as a residential settlement for workers at the local oil refinery, today one of Central Asia's major processing facilities for crude pumped from the Lebap fields. The refinery produces petrol, diesel, lubricating oils and bitumen for the domestic market and for export to Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Seýdi also hosts a thermal power plant and a modern drinking water treatment facility; its skyline is dominated by typical Soviet panel housing.
