Po-i-Kalyan is a prominent architectural complex in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, centered around the Kalyan Minaret. The minaret, built in 1127 by the Karakhanid ruler Arslan Khan, stands 46.5 meters tall and is known as the 'Tower of Death' because criminals were once thrown from its top. The adjacent Kalyan Mosque, completed in 1514, has a courtyard measuring 39 by 39 meters and a large iwan. The Mir-i-Arab Madrasa, built between 1535 and 1536, remains a functioning madrasa. The complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Historic Centre of Bukhara. The minaret's foundation is 9 meters deep, and its diameter tapers from 9 meters at the base to 6 meters at the top. The mosque can accommodate 12,000 worshippers during major prayers.

Visiting
The Po-i-Kalyan complex is open daily to visitors and includes the Kalyan Mosque, the Madrasa, and the famous minaret. The courtyard is freely accessible, while entrance to the interiors typically requires a ticket.
Typical hours
The complex typically opens at 9 am and closes between 5 pm and 7 pm depending on the season. During prayer times, especially on Fridays, access to certain areas may be restricted.
Photography
Photography is generally allowed throughout the site, but without flash in prayer rooms. The minaret has excellent photo opportunities from outside, especially at sunset.
Time needed
Allow at least one hour to visit the entire complex. If you want to enjoy the architectural details and the view from the minaret, budget two hours.
Combine with
Combine the visit with the Ark Citadel and the Samanid Mausoleum, both in the heart of Bukhara. The old Bukhara Bazaar is also within walking distance and gives local crafts.
Getting there
The complex is centrally located in Bukhara's old town, easily reachable on foot. Taxis and bicycles are good means of transport for getting around the city.
