Repetek Biosphere Reserve (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The Repetek Biosphere Reserve, established in 1927, is one of the oldest and most significant protected areas in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan. Spanning approximately 34,600 hectares, the reserve is internationally renowned for its extreme climatic conditions, where summer temperatures frequently soar above 50 degrees Celsius. It was founded to study the sandy desert ecosystem and to preserve its unique flora and fauna, including extensive black saxaul forests. Geographically, the terrain is characterized by massive shifting sand dunes (barchans) and vast sandy plains that host specialized wildlife. Notable residents include the goitered gazelle, the desert monitor lizard, and numerous rare insect species adapted to the intense heat. Since 1979, Repetek has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, serving as a pivotal center for research on desertification and biological adaptation to arid environments. The on-site research station provides deep insights into decades of ecological monitoring and scientific discovery.
