Farap is a small town on the right bank of the Amu Darya in Lebap Region, directly opposite Türkmenabat and just a few kilometres from the Uzbek border. It has around 15,000 inhabitants and grew at the oldest permanent crossing of the Amu Darya, a Silk Road caravan stop that for centuries handled traffic between Bukhara and Merv. With the construction of the bridge and the Türkmenabat-Bukhara railway, Farap became Turkmenistan's most important border crossing with Uzbekistan, for both rail and road traffic. The local economy revolves around cotton farming, a large cement plant using local limestone, a fertiliser works and the cross-border wholesale trade in food and consumer goods from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
