Magdanly is a mining town in the far south-east of Turkmenistan, in the Köýtendag district of Lebap Region, about 25 kilometres from the Uzbek border. The town counts roughly 25,000 inhabitants and sits at the foot of the Köýtendag mountains, a spur of the Pamir-Alai system with deep gorges and karst caves. Until 1999 it was called Gowurdak (Gaurdak) and has been the centre of Turkmenistan's sulphur production since the 1930s, while also known for rock salt, limestone and lead-zinc mining. The surrounding area features striking natural monuments: the Karlyuk Caves with their stalactites, the dinosaur footprints on the Hodjapil Plateau and the sacred Kyrk-Gyz shrine. The local economy today rests on mining, a fertiliser plant and small marble quarries.
