Formerly known as Nakhshab and Nasaf, the city officially celebrated its 2,700th anniversary in 2006 under the auspices of UNESCO. Historically, Karshi served as an important stop on trade routes connecting Bukhara with India. A key architectural landmark is the Karshi Bridge over the Qashqadaryo River, originally constructed in the 16th century, which remains one of the oldest brick bridges in Central Asia. Economically, the city is vital to Uzbekistan's energy sector due to the nearby Shurtan gas field and its extensive agricultural development in the Karshi Steppe, made possible by massive irrigation projects. The city also hosts significant military installations and has developed into a major industrial and cultural hub for the southern part of the country.
