Alas is a town steep in history located within the Manufahi municipality on the southern coast of Timor-Leste. The town is widely recognized for its pivotal role in uprisings against Portuguese colonial rule during the early 20th century, most notably the 1912 rebellion led by Dom Boaventura. Alas is situated in a fertile plain crisscrossed by rivers, which facilitates productive agriculture focused on rice and maize cultivation. Historically, the region was also rich in sandalwood, a resource that attracted significant interest from foreign powers. The architecture of Alas retains traces of its colonial past, interspersed with the traditional stilt houses of the local Timorese population. In more recent history, Alas served as a strategic sanctuary for the FALINTIL independence movement, aided by the surrounding dense tropical forests. The cultural identity of Alas is deeply embedded in local legends and the heritage of the former Kingdom of Alas. Despite the environmental challenges posed by flooding during the monsoon season, Alas remains a vital hub for communities in southern Manufahi.
