💡 Tips
- Plan hikes to Mt Kablaki only during the dry season (May-November), as trails become dangerously slippery in the rain.
- Sunday is the main market day; this is when villagers from the surrounding mountains bring their best produce and livestock.
- Bring warm clothing, as Same's mountain elevation makes it significantly cooler than the coastal regions.
- Expect a 4-6 hour drive from Dili; the winding mountain roads offer some of the most spectacular views in Timor-Leste.
- Always show respect to local 'Uma Lulik' (sacred houses) and ask for permission before taking photographs.

Same is the administrative capital of the Manufahi municipality, positioned in the rugged central highlands of Timor-Leste. The town is deeply embedded in the national consciousness as a historic center of resistance against Portuguese colonial rule, most notably during the Great Rebellion of 1912 led by Dom Boaventura. Geographically, Same is characterized by its remarkable location in a valley surrounded by the foothills of Mount Ramelau, the highest peak in the country. The climate here is significantly cooler and wetter than in the coastal regions, making it a prime area for the cultivation of premium organic coffee and various vegetables. During the Indonesian occupation, the region served as a vital stronghold for FALINTIL guerrilla fighters, which unfortunately led to widespread destruction during the Indonesian military's withdrawal in 1999. Today, the town is emerging as a gateway for mountain tourism and eco-expeditions into the island's pristine interior. Same's architecture still bears the marks of its colonial past alongside modern reconstruction efforts.
