HMAS Voyager Shipwreck (Timor-Leste)

Weather…

The shipwreck of HMAS Voyager lies off the coast of Betano in southern Timor-Leste, serving as a significant naval relic from World War II. This Australian V-class destroyer ran aground on September 23, 1942, during a hazardous operation to land troops and supplies for Allied forces resisting the Japanese invasion. The vessel was a key component of the Sparrow Force operations in the region, providing vital support in the defense of the island. Following the grounding, more than 250 crew members were safely evacuated before Japanese aircraft attacked and destroyed the stranded vessel with bombs. Today, the site is recognized as a protected underwater memorial and is a prominent destination for skilled scuba divers. The scattered remains of the destroyer on the seabed have evolved into a thriving artificial reef, providing habitat for a wide variety of marine species. The wreck stands as a silent witness to the naval battles of the Pacific theater and the strategic military history of Timor-Leste.
