Liji Badlands (Taiwan)

Weather…

The Liji Badlands, also referred to as the Liji Moon World, are located in Taitung County at the southern end of the East Rift Valley. This unique landscape is composed of the Lichi Melange, a geological mixture of soft mudstone and embedded hard rock fragments formed by the intense collision between the Philippine Sea and Eurasian plates. Because the mudstone is highly susceptible to rainwater erosion, the area has developed a rugged topography of sharp ridges and deep gullies where vegetation struggles to grow. This phenomenon is a classic example of badlands topography. Geologically, the Liji Badlands serve as a 'window' into the ancient ocean floor, as the tectonic process has thrust deep-sea sediments and crustal fragments to the surface. The region is a vital site for geoscientists studying active plate tectonics in Taiwan. Historically, the land was considered barren for farming, which contributed to the preservation of its stark, alien-like beauty.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Liji Badlands are typically reached by road from the nearby city of Taitung, serving as a usual starting point for exploring this region.
📅
Best season
The most favorable conditions are generally found during the drier cooler months, avoiding the heavy summer rains and typical typhoon season.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect highly eroded mudstone landscapes with uneven and potentially slippery surfaces, especially after periods of typical local rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy walking shoes with excellent grip are highly recommended, along with sun protection and plenty of water for navigating the exposed valley.
🅿️
Parking
Parking facilities are generally available near the main viewing areas, though visitors often leave their vehicles in designated spots near Taitung.
⚠️
Safety
Caution is advised near steep drop-offs and crumbling ridges, as the soft mudstone is inherently unstable and prone to frequent natural erosion.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit to observe the surreal moon-like formations usually lasts between one to three hours, depending on the extent of walking desired.

Facts

  • The badlands are primarily composed of the Lichi Melange structure
  • Rainfall creates sharp 'knife-edge' ridges through rapid erosion
  • The site is located exactly on the suture zone of two tectonic plates
  • Mudstone here contains high amounts of salt, inhibiting plant growth
  • It provides rare surface exposure of ancient deep-sea sediments
  • The area is a key educational site for geological studies in Taiwan
