Alishan National Scenic Area spans 415 km² in south-central Taiwan, featuring montane cloud forests, peaks up to 2,498 m, and the historic Alishan Forest Railway. The narrow-gauge railway, built by the Japanese in 1912 for timber transport, runs 71.4 km from Chiayi to an elevation of 2,216 m. The area hosts ancient red cypress trees exceeding 1,000 years old. Sunrise from Zhushan Peak (2,498 m) is a famous spectacle. Average annual temperature is 10.6°C, with precipitation over 4,000 mm. Originally inhabited by the Tsou indigenous group, Alishan now welcomes over 2 million visitors yearly. The region is also known for high-mountain oolong tea, cultivated on some 2,000 ha. The railway includes 49 tunnels and 77 bridges. Besides tourism, Alishan plays a vital role in watershed protection and biodiversity conservation.

The best way to arrive is by train from Chiayi on the famous Alishan Forest Railway, taking about 3.5 hours. Alternatively, buses run from Chiayi to the area's main entrance.
