Sun Moon Lake (Taiwan)

Weather…

Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan's largest natural lake, spans 7.93 km² at an elevation of 748 m in Nantou County. Its distinctive shape, round on the east, crescent on the west, inspired its name. The lake formed through tectonic activity and was later dammed in the 1930s for hydroelectric power. It is a sacred site for the indigenous Thao people, who consider Lalu Island their ancestral home. The lake is surrounded by mountains reaching 2,000 m, covered in cedar and bamboo forests. The region experiences a mild subtropical climate with an average temperature of 19°C. Key landmarks include Wenwu Temple (built 1938), Ci'en Pagoda (46 m), and the Xuanguang Temple. A 30-km cycling path encircles the lake, often ranked among the world's most scenic. The area is also known for high-mountain Assam tea, yielding about 200 tons annually. Sun Moon Lake attracts over 6 million visitors per year and supports a thriving tourism and tea industry.
