Orchid Island, also known as Lanyu, is one of Taiwan's most authentic and pristine locations. The island is inhabited by the Tao tribe (also called Yami), who have preserved their unique maritime culture for centuries. A characteristic feature is the traditional underground houses, partially built into the soil for protection against typhoons. Hand-carved Tatala canoes, with their red-white-black patterns, are iconic symbols of the island. Nature on Lanyu is wild and spectacular. Rugged volcanic formations like Twin Lion Rock or Dragon Head Rock line the coast. The island's interior is covered with dense rainforest, home to rare animal and plant species. Diving and snorkeling are a must here due to the extremely clear water and rich marine biodiversity. The 'Flying Fish Season' from March to June is the most important cultural time of the year. Access requires planning, usually by ferry from Taitung or Kenting, or by small plane from Taitung. The infrastructure is simple, which adds to the island's charm. The best time to visit is spring or early summer. Visitors should approach local customs and the privacy of the Tao residents with great respect, especially when photographing people or boats.
