💡 Tips
- The most beautiful way to arrive in Morcote is by boat from Lugano. The approach from the water gives the best first impression of the village.
- Wear comfortable shoes. The village is steep, and the climb to the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso involves about 400 steps, but the view is worth it.
- If you're staying in a hotel in the region, ask for the 'Ticino Ticket'. It provides free public transport and discounts on boat trips.
- Visit Parco Scherrer in the late afternoon. The light is good for photos, and it's often less crowded.
- Get intentionally lost in the narrow alleys above the lakeside arcades to discover the quieter, residential side of Morcote.
🍽 Food
Try freshly caught fish in one of the restaurants under the lakeside arcades. Ask for the 'catch of the day'.
This traditional Ticino dessert made from old bread, cocoa, and nuts is a delight. Look for it in a local bakery or café.
Enjoy a glass of local wine or an 'Aperol Spritz' with small snacks at a waterfront bar as the sun goes down.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
In the small shops under the arcades, you can often find handmade ceramics and other unique souvenirs.
Look for small food shops ('Alimentari') that sell local olive oil, honey, and pickled specialities.
This 'Garden of Wonders' is full of hidden corners, replica temples, and exotic plants, well-suited for escaping the crowds.
After the climb to the church, the terraced cemetery features a sweeping and peaceful view over the lake.
Take a short walk to the neighbouring, even smaller village of Vico Morcote for a dose of authentic, undisturbed village atmosphere.
Water temperature…
Morcote sits in a terraced fashion on the southern slopes of Monte Arbostora on the shores of Lake Lugano. The village is renowned for its grand architecture and narrow medieval alleys. Its most prominent landmark is the 13th-century pilgrimage church of Santa Maria del Sasso, perched high above the village. Visitors must climb over 400 stone steps to reach it, but they are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the lake. Another highlight is Scherrer Park, often called the 'Garden of Wonders'. This botanical and architectural garden features sculptures and replicas of famous buildings from around the world, tucked away within lush subtropical vegetation. Morcote's waterfront is characterized by arcaded houses from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, which now house characterful restaurants and shops. The village is best reached by boat from Lugano, making the journey part of the experience. Hikers enjoy the trail leading from Monte San Salvatore down to Morcote. The best time to visit is spring when the park is in full bloom. Culinary-wise, lakeside restaurants offer fresh lake fish and excellent local Ticinese wines.
