The Abbey of Chiaravalle, located south of Milan, is one of the most significant examples of Cistercian architecture in Italy. Founded in 1135 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux as a daughter house of the Clairvaux Abbey, it played a decisive role in the reclamation and agricultural development of the surrounding marshlands. The architecture marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with its brick construction being typical of the Lombard building tradition. Particularly striking is the 56-meter-high bell tower, known as 'Ciribiciaccoli', a 14th-century masterpiece featuring delicate arches and loggias. Inside, the abbey houses valuable frescoes by Bernardino Luini and the Fiammenghini brothers, as well as a magnificent 17th-century carved choir. Despite secularization under Napoleon, the Cistercian monks returned in 1952 and continue to uphold the spiritual and agricultural traditions of the monastery today.
