The Brissago Islands consist of Isola Grande and the smaller Isola di Sant’Apollinare. Thanks to the mild microclimate of Lake Maggiore, over 1,700 plant species from all five continents thrive here in the open air. Isola Grande is the main island and has housed the Botanical Garden of the Canton of Ticino since 1950. Visitors can find eucalyptus trees, bamboo groves, palms, and rare exotic flowers within an idyllic park setting. The islands' history is intertwined with Baroness Antoinette de Saint Léger, who began creating the gardens in 1885 and hosted many artists and intellectuals. Later, department store tycoon Max Emden built the neoclassical Villa Emden, which today functions as a restaurant and hotel. The smaller island remains in its natural state and is used for scientific research. Access is only possible by boat, with regular services from Ascona, Locarno, and Brissago. The best time to visit is between March and October. A full circuit of the island takes about an hour, though the tranquility and exotic scents invite longer stays. The restaurant in Villa Emden provides fine dining with an exceptional view of the surrounding lake and mountains.
