Val Bavona (Switzerland)

Weather…

Val Bavona is a steep side valley of the Maggia Valley in the Canton of Ticino, renowned for its wild romantic landscape and archaic way of life. It is considered one of the steepest and deepest valleys in the Alps, shaped by massive prehistoric landslides and glacial movements. A unique feature of the valley is the lack of electricity in almost all of its eleven settlements, with the exception of San Carlo. Residents traditionally use gas, solar energy, and small generators to preserve the historical fabric of the 'rustici' (stone houses). The Foroglio waterfall, which plunges 110 meters over a cliff wall, is the most striking natural feature of the valley. Culturally, the valley is a living museum of transhumance, as it is almost completely deserted in winter. Poor soil conditions forced inhabitants to create small gardens under giant rock boulders, known as 'hanging gardens'.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The valley is accessible from Locarno by bus or car via Bignasco and Cavergno in the Maggia Valley. The narrow road leads deep into the valley as far as the village of San Carlo at the end.
📅
Best season
The best time for a visit is from May to October, as many settlements are uninhabited and difficult to access in winter. In summer, the wild river has a welcome cooling down in nature.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is characterized by steep rock walls, huge stone blocks, and traditional Rustici stone houses. There are hiking trails on the valley floor as well as demanding paths leading to the high Alps.
🎒
What to bring
Wear good hiking boots and bring enough water, as there are only a few places to eat in the valley. Since the valley has no electricity connection, a power bank for your mobile phone is sensible.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is available in Bignasco, Cavergno, and at some marked spots along the valley road. In the narrow villages, parking is usually only permitted for residents or is very strictly limited.
⚠️
Safety
Be careful during thunderstorms, as streams in the steep valley can swell very quickly and make paths impassable. After rainfall, the paths on the smooth stones can be extremely slippery for hikers.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan a whole day to explore the various hamlets like Foroglio with its waterfall in peace. A hike through the entire valley takes several hours, depending on the pace you choose for your journey.
