Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is a large medieval fortress in Milan, northern Italy. It was built in the 15th century by Francesco Sforza, Duke of Milan, on the remnants of a 14th-century fortification. Later renovated and enlarged, it became one of the largest citadels in Europe. Throughout its history, it has served as a residence, a military fortress, and has been the target of numerous sieges and destructions. One of the most notable contributions to the castle came from Leonardo da Vinci, who worked as a military engineer for Ludovico Sforza and designed several defensive works as well as frescoes inside. After the unification of Italy in the 19th century, the castle underwent extensive restoration, transforming it from a military barracks into a cultural hub. Today, Sforza Castle houses several civic museums and art collections, including the Pinacoteca del Castello Sforzesco, the Museum of Ancient Art, the Museum of Musical Instruments, the Egyptian Museum, and Michelangelo's last masterpiece, the Rondanini Pietà.
