💡 Tips
- Verbania is made of two main parts, Pallanza and Intra. Take time to explore both as they have different characters. Pallanza is elegant, Intra is a bustling commercial hub.
- Verbania is the well-suited starting point for boat trips to the Borromean Islands. Buy a hop-on-hop-off ferry ticket for maximum flexibility.
- The gardens of Villa Taranto are vast. Allow at least 3-4 hours for a leisurely walk and wear comfortable shoes. The best time to visit is spring for the tulip and rhododendron blooms.
- Unlike Stresa on the other side of the lake, Verbania gets the sun until late in the evening. The Pallanza lakefront is well-suited for a sunset aperitivo.
🍽 Food
Try perch, trout, or whitefish (coregone) at one of the many lakeside restaurants, especially on Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island).
A rustic version of gnocchi made with chestnut flour and pumpkin, served with melted alpine cheese. Look for it in traditional trattorias in the Intra district.
Ask for 'formaggi d'alpeggio' (alpine pasture cheeses) at a local delicatessen ('salumeria'). They are delicious with local honey.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
A large and lively market is held every Saturday morning. It's a great place to find local foods, clothes, and household goods.
This is the main shopping street in the Intra district, lined with a mix of familiar brands and independent boutiques.
Look out for shops selling products from the nearby valleys, such as wood carvings, stoneware, and hand-woven textiles.
Away from the main paths, you can find quiet benches and secluded corners to enjoy the peace and the exotic plants.
The lakeside promenade of Pallanza is wider and more tranquil than Intra's. Great for a gentle evening stroll.
A lovely public park on the lakefront in Pallanza. Bring a book and relax on the lawns overlooking the lake.

Verbania is the largest city on Lake Maggiore and is widely known as the 'Garden on the Lake.' It was formed in 1939 by merging the historic towns of Intra and Pallanza. Intra is the city's commercial heart, boasting a bustling ferry terminal and a welcoming old town, while Pallanza is more refined, featuring elegant villas and a grand waterfront promenade. The city's top attraction is the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto, covering 16 hectares and showcasing over 20,000 plant varieties, including rare lotuses and giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies. Beyond Villa Taranto, Villa Giulia and its lakeside park offer a glimpse into 19th-century aristocratic life. Verbania provides some of the best vantage points for viewing the Borromean Islands, which are easily reached by frequent boat services from both of the city's main piers. The 16th-century Madonna di Campagna church stands as a fine example of Renaissance architecture in the Piedmont region. Verbania consistently ranks among the most environmentally friendly and livable cities in Italy. Local cuisine highlights freshwater fish and artisan cheeses from the nearby Ossola valleys. The city is also the main gateway to the Val Grande National Park, Italy's largest wilderness area. The peak visiting months are April through October, with spring being particularly famous for the blooming of camellias and azaleas that decorate the city’s public spaces and private estates.
