💡 Tips
- Even though it's Italy, the official currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). Euros are often accepted, but your change will likely be in Francs.
- Campione is an enclave within Switzerland, so there are no formal border checks when arriving from Lugano. Travelling by ferry features wonderful views.
- The town uses Swiss postcodes and the Swiss telephone network. This is useful to know if you're calling a taxi or sending a postcard.
- The casino is the main attraction and dominates the skyline. Even if you don't gamble, the building's modern architecture is a noteworthy sight, especially at night.
🍽 Food
A classic dish of the Italian lakes region. Look for a lakeside restaurant to enjoy it with a view.
A hearty polenta dish with melted cheese and garlic. Great for a cooler day, found in traditional 'grotto' style restaurants in the area.
Try the catch of the day, often whitefish (coregone) or trout, simply grilled or fried. Your best bet is at restaurants that specialise in fish.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Due to the town's special tax status, you may find good deals on watches, jewellery, and perfume, often priced in Swiss Francs.
Even though it's an enclave, you can still find small shops selling Italian specialities like olive oil, pasta, and wine.
The lakeside promenade is great for a quiet walk, offering gorgeous views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains.
This church on the lake's edge is a peaceful spot. Walk down the steps to the lake for a moment of tranquility.
Explore the narrow alleyways away from the main square to get a feel for the older, quieter part of town.

Campione d'Italia is a unique geopolitical anomaly: an Italian enclave of less than two square kilometers entirely surrounded by the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Lugano, its unusual status dates back to the 8th century when it was gifted to the Monastery of Saint Ambrose in Milan. Today, the town presents a curious mix of Italian sovereignty and Swiss practicalities, most transactions are in Swiss francs, yet the police force and legal jurisdiction are Italian. The town's skyline is dominated by the Casinò di Campione, a colossal modern structure designed by the world-renowned architect Mario Botta. As one of the largest casinos in Europe, it has long been the primary economic driver of the enclave. Aside from the casino, Campione features a pristine lakeside promenade and the historic San Zenone church. The waterfront gives magnificent panoramic views across the lake to the city of Lugano and Monte San Salvatore. Benefiting from a special tax status, Campione is a prestigious residential area for the wealthy. It is accessible either by boat from Lugano or via Swiss roads. Despite the massive modern casino, the historic core of the town retains a typical Italian charm with narrow streets and cozy cafés. It is particularly enchanting at night when the lights of Lugano glitter across the water. The best time to visit is during the mild months between April and October.
