Castelgrande Courtyard (Switzerland)

Weather…

Castelgrande in Bellinzona, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is renowned for its expansive central courtyard and massive fortifications that have controlled Alpine transit routes for over a millennium. While the site's roots trace back to Roman times, the structures seen today were primarily expanded between the 13th and 15th centuries by the Dukes of Milan and later by the Swiss Confederates. The vast courtyard underwent a significant modern architectural restoration in the 1980s by Aurelio Galfetti, which seamlessly integrated medieval stonework with contemporary design elements. Two prominent towers, the Torre Bianca (White Tower) and the Torre Nera (Black Tower), flank the courtyard and highlight the fortress's strategic dominance over the valley. The "Murata," a series of long defensive walls extending from the castle into the valley floor, once formed an impenetrable barrier against northern invaders. Today, the courtyard of Castelgrande serves as a public space and cultural hub, vividly bringing the monumental history of Ticino to life for all who visit.
