Riehen is part of the Canton of Basel-Stadt and is one of only three municipalities in the canton. Situated in the lower Wiese Valley on the border with Germany, it is characterized by its park-like landscapes and high quality of life. An internationally prominent feature of Riehen is the Fondation Beyeler, one of Switzerland's most visited and prestigious art museums, housed in a spectacular building designed by Renzo Piano. Riehen's history is closely tied to the city of Basel, as it came under Basel's ownership as early as the 16th century. The municipality has successfully maintained its village-like character despite its proximity to the urban center of Basel, often being referred to as a 'large village'. In addition to art, Riehen gives significant recreational spaces such as the Wenkenpark and the extensive green areas along the Wiese River. The community is deeply committed to sustainability and was the first in Switzerland to be certified as an 'Energy City'. Riehen is perfectly connected to Basel's city center and the surrounding region via the tram and S-Bahn networks.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
