Ras Xaafuun is a prominent peninsula in eastern Somalia, representing the easternmost point of the African continent. Located in the Bari region, it is connected to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus known as a tombolo, created by the interplay of ocean currents and sediment deposition. Geographically, the area is characterized by low-lying limestone formations and beaches battered by the strong swells of the Indian Ocean. Historically, Ras Xaafuun was a thriving trade hub in antiquity, often identified with the ancient emporium of Mundu mentioned in classical texts. Today, the local economy revolves around artisanal fishing and salt production, with large salt pans dotting the landscape. In 2004, the peninsula was severely impacted by the Indian Ocean tsunami, highlighting the vulnerability of this exposed coastal community. The vegetation is sparse and salt-tolerant, consisting of hardy shrubs that can withstand the maritime spray. The surrounding waters are exceptionally rich in marine life, particularly tuna and various shark species. Ras Xaafuun remains a significant geographic landmark and a critical point for navigation in the western Indian Ocean.
