Qandala is an ancient port city on the coast of the Gulf of Aden in the Bari region of Puntland. The city has a history spanning thousands of years and is often identified with the ancient trading post 'Cane,' mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. For centuries, Qandala was a premier hub for the export of frankincense and myrrh, products harvested in the rugged mountains rising directly behind the town. During the early 20th century, the Italians constructed a fort here and utilized the harbor as a strategic base in northeastern Somalia. Geographically, Qandala's dramatic setting between the deep blue sea and the steep limestone cliffs of the Golis range isolates the settlement, making land access difficult and sea travel the primary mode of transport. Despite challenges from piracy and political instability, the city remains an important site for fish processing and the frankincense trade. The architecture of Qandala is a blend of traditional Somali coastal styles and colonial remnants, giving the town a unique, albeit weathered, character.
