Bargaal Fort served as the seasonal capital of the Majeerteen Sultanate and was a major defensive installation on the Somali coast. Constructed in the late 19th century during the reign of Sultan Boqor Osman Mahamuud, the fort was a central hub for managing the trade of aromatic resins and livestock. The facility was characterized by its thick walls and strategically placed watchtowers designed to protect Bargaal's harbor from maritime incursions. During the consolidation of Italian colonial rule in Somalia, the fort became a flashpoint of heavy combat. In 1925, it sustained severe damage from Italian naval bombardment, signaling the beginning of the end for the Sultanate's autonomy. The current ruins in the Bari region stand as a historical site that highlights the former political and economic significance of this coastal stretch.
