Mühlhausen is a captivating Thuringian city that serves as a living monument to medieval German history. Known as the 'Town of Towers,' it has a skyline dominated by the spires of its eleven historic churches, including the grand St. Mary's Cathedral. The city's primary attraction is its nearly complete medieval fortification system, featuring a walkable parapet that provides remarkable views over the red-tiled roofs. In the early 16th century, Mühlhausen became a focal point of the Reformation; the revolutionary preacher Thomas Müntzer led his followers here during the Peasants' War. The musical legacy of Johann Sebastian Bach is equally celebrated, as he composed several masterpieces during his tenure as a local organist. Today, Mühlhausen combines this rich cultural tapestry with modern amenities, serving as a gateway to the nearby Hainich National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its ancient beech forests.
