💡 Tips

  • A reliable 4x4 vehicle is mandatory to navigate the rugged terrain and sandy tracks leading to Cape Guardafui.
  • Respect the conservative Islamic culture by dressing modestly at all times (long clothes, covering shoulders and knees).
  • Always ask for permission before photographing locals, as doing otherwise is considered highly disrespectful.
  • Plan a visit to the historic Francesco Crispi lighthouse; the panoramic view of the Red Sea meeting the Indian Ocean is spectacular.

Alula, also known as Caluula, is a historic coastal town located in the Bari region of northeastern Somalia, situated along the Guardafui Channel. As the northernmost settlement in the country, it occupies a strategic position near Cape Guardafui, where the Gulf of Aden meets the Indian Ocean. Historically, Alula served as an important administrative center during the Italian Somaliland era and was once the capital of the Majeerteen Sultanate's coastal regions. The town is characterized by its arid landscape and its reliance on maritime activities, including traditional fishing and seasonal trade. In recent decades, Alula has become part of the autonomous Puntland State of Somalia, focusing on developing its local infrastructure and maritime security. The architecture in the area reflects a mix of traditional Somali styles and colonial influences from the early 20th century, marking its long history as a trade hub.
