Hordio Lagoon (Somalia)

Weather…

Hordio Lagoon is situated on the northeastern coast of Somalia, near the historic town of Xaafuun along the Indian Ocean. Geographically, it is part of a complex coastal formation connected to the mainland by the Hafun isthmus. The lagoon is ecologically significant as a stopover for numerous migratory bird species using the African-Eurasian flyway. During the Italian colonial period in the 1920s, one of the world's largest salt production facilities was established here, known as the Società Sale di Hafun. The shallow, saline waters of the lagoon provided good conditions for evaporation and industrial-scale salt harvesting. Today, the remnants of these facilities stand as a testament to the region's industrial history, while the lagoon itself remains a vital habitat for flamingos and other wading birds. The extremely arid climate of the area further increases the salt concentration within the basin.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Venturing to this remarkably isolated lagoon absolutely requires enlisting a knowledgeable local guide. You will depend heavily on a robust 4x4 vehicle to conquer the unmarked, sandy coastal tracks.
📅
Best season
Planning an expedition during the slightly cooler, drier months between November and March is strongly advised. This timing critically minimizes the severe risk of vehicles bogging down in coastal mud.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The harsh surrounding environment is predominantly defined by expansive sandy plains and dry scrubland. As you physically approach the water, the ground often transitions into notoriously soft, tricky mud.
🎒
What to bring
Total operational self-sufficiency is mandatory in this frontier region. Packing massive drinking water reserves, crucial extra fuel, heavy-duty sun protection, and a comprehensive medical kit is essential.
🅿️
Parking
Conventional parking infrastructure simply does not exist anywhere in this remote landscape. Drivers must intelligently select highly stable, elevated ground well away from the deceptive high-tide mud lines.
⚠️
Safety
Traveling into this profound isolation demands meticulous logistical foresight and adherence to expert local security advice. Reliable satellite communication devices are a non-negotiable safety lifeline here.
⏱️
Time needed
Actually surveying the lagoon waters constitutes merely a brief window of one to two hours. This short stop is invariably nested within a much longer, demanding multi-day regional coastal expedition.
