💡 Tips

  • The Alternativer Bärenpark in Worbis is a sanctuary, not a traditional zoo; bring binoculars to spot the rescued bears in the large forested enclosures.
  • The twin city has two distinct vibes: Leinefelde is known for modern urban renewal, while Worbis features a historic half-timbered center.
  • Public transport connects the two main districts, but renting a bicycle is the best way to explore the surrounding Eichsfeld countryside.
  • Due to strong Catholic traditions in the Eichsfeld region, many religious holidays are strictly observed, which will affect shop opening hours.

Highlights of 2026

Leinefelde-Worbis is a dynamic twin city in northern Thuringia, created in 2004 through the merger of two previously independent towns. It serves as the primary hub of the Eichsfeld, a region distinguished by its Catholic heritage and unique traditions. Leinefelde gained international architectural fame for its innovative 'Stadtumbau Ost' (Urban Transformation East) projects, where drab Socialist-era high-rises were creatively remodeled into stylish, sustainable apartment complexes. In contrast, the Worbis district gives a quaint, traditional atmosphere and is home to the Alternative Bear Park Worbis, a renowned sanctuary for rescued bears and wolves. The city is geographically significant as the location of the Leine River's source. Due to its central location in Germany and excellent connections to the A38 motorway and major rail lines, it has developed into a thriving economic and logistics center. Visitors are drawn to its mix of modern urbanism, nature sanctuaries, and the rich culinary and religious traditions of the Eichsfeld highlands.
