The Alula Majeerteen Castle is situated on the strategically vital northern coast of Somalia, near Cape Guardafui along the Gulf of Aden. Alula functioned as one of the primary capitals of the Majeerteen Sultanate during the late 19th and early 20th centuries under Sultan Boqor Osman Mahamuud. The fortress was constructed to monitor lucrative trade routes passing through the Horn of Africa and to maintain the Sultanate's autonomy against encroaching European colonial powers. The castle is a massive stone structure designed for both defense and as an administrative headquarters for the Sultan. In 1889, a pivotal treaty with Italy was signed here, which dictated the diplomatic landscape of the region for decades. Despite suffering heavy damage during colonial military operations between 1925 and 1927, the ruins remain a potent symbol of the Sultanate's past maritime authority.

The Alula Majeerteen Castle ruins are located on the Somali coast and are freely accessible; visitors can explore the remains of the fortress walls and towers. Since it is an open ruin, caution is needed - some parts are at risk of collapse.

There are no fixed visiting hours as the ruin can be entered at any time. Visiting during daylight is recommended because the paths can be dangerous in the dark.

The easy on the eye location of the castle on a cliff above the sea gives excellent photo subjects, especially at sunrise. Be careful not to touch the crumbling walls to avoid collapse - a telephoto lens helps capture details safely.

Getting there

Alula is a remote town in the Puntland region; the best access is by four-wheel-drive vehicle from Bosaso (about a 4-hour drive). There is no public transport on site, so a private driver or organized tour is recommended.

Bring enough water and food, as there are no supply facilities on site. Binoculars are useful for observing the coastline and possible bird colonies.
