Located on the Gulf of Aden, the city serves as the main gateway for the import and export of goods throughout the region. Historically, the city was known as Bender Cassim and has evolved from a small fishing community into a lively metropolis. The geography of the region is bounded to the south by the Golis Mountains, which form a natural barrier to the interior. Boosaaso benefits from its strategic location near the shipping lanes leading to the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. The port primarily exports frankincense, livestock, and fish products to the Gulf States. Due to rapid economic growth, the city has experienced significant migration from other parts of Somalia, leading to dynamic urban development and the expansion of industrial infrastructure.
