Tetere Convoy Memorial (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

The Tetere Convoy Memorial on Guadalcanal is a significant historical site that commemorates the massive logistical operations of the Allied forces during World War II. Starting in 1943, this area functioned as a major supply hub and staging ground for amphibious vehicles known as Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT) or "Amtracs." These vehicles were indispensable for the island-hopping campaign, providing the necessary mobility to cross coral reefs and transport supplies through difficult coastal terrain. Following the cessation of hostilities in 1945, the cost of shipping these heavy machines back to the United States was deemed prohibitive, leading to the abandonment of hundreds of vehicles along the Tetere coastline. Today, the weathered and rusted remains of these Amtracs stand as silent witnesses to the industrial scale of the Pacific War. The memorial site serves to educate visitors about the crucial role of logistics and honors the service members who managed the vital supply lines that sustained the front-line troops.
