  • As Tetere is an agricultural hub, it is best to visit early in the morning to avoid the midday heat.
  • Transport from Honiara relies mostly on private taxis or minibuses. Always agree on the fare before departing.
  • Bring enough cash in the local currency, as ATMs are scarce around the plantation areas.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and use insect repellent if you are walking near the palm plantations.
  • Always ask for permission before entering any plantations, as they are mostly private property.

Tetere is located on the northern coast of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, approximately 30 kilometers east of the capital, Honiara. The settlement gained historical prominence through the establishment of the Tetere Leprosarium by the Marist Brothers in the 1940s, later managed by the St. John of God Brothers. During World War II, the Tetere region saw significant military activity during the Guadalcanal Campaign, positioned strategically between Henderson Field and Japanese strongholds to the east. Today, Tetere serves as a key agricultural hub, where oil palm plantations and rice cultivation characterize the economic landscape. The community is also home to a major correctional center and several educational institutions that are vital to the province's social infrastructure. Despite its relative proximity to the capital, Tetere maintains a rural atmosphere, shaped by the Pacific tides and the fertile alluvial soils of the coastal plains.
