Tulagi (listed here as A-Tulagi) is a small island in the Central Province of the Solomon Islands and served as the capital of the British protectorate from 1896 to 1942. The island was chosen for its excellent natural deep-water harbor, which offered protection from storms and was strategically positioned between the major islands of Guadalcanal and Malaita. During World War II, Tulagi was occupied by Japan in May 1942 and recaptured by US forces in August 1942 after fierce fighting. Following the war, the capital was moved to Honiara due to extensive destruction, but Tulagi remained an important fishing and administrative center. The island's architecture still shows traces of its colonial past, and the surrounding waters are now a world-renowned destination for wreck diving. Tulagi epitomizes the transition from a colonial power center to a peaceful island community with a rich historical heritage.
