Alligator Creek (Solomon Islands)

Weather…

Alligator Creek, technically a tidal lagoon of the Ilu River, was the site of the Battle of the Tenaru on August 21, 1942. This engagement marked the first major Japanese counter-offensive aimed at retaking Henderson Field. Colonel Kiyonao Ichiki led an elite detachment of nearly 900 troops in a series of frontal assaults across the sandbar at the river's mouth. However, the Japanese vastly underestimated the strength of the US Marines' defensive perimeter. By dawn, the Ichiki Detachment was virtually annihilated by machine-gun fire and a subsequent flanking maneuver by light tanks. The battle's name is actually a misnomer, as there are no alligators in the Solomon Islands, only saltwater crocodiles. Today, the mouth of the creek is a somber place of remembrance, where the peaceful coastline belies the intense violence that occurred during the campaign's early days.
