Tulagi Island, positioned off the coast of Florida Island (Gela), served as the administrative capital of the British Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1893 until 1942. Renowned for its exceptional deep-water harbor, the island was a vital strategic asset for both colonial administration and military operations. In May 1942, Japanese forces occupied Tulagi to establish a seaplane base, but it was liberated by US Marines in August 1942 after fierce close-quarters combat. The assault on Tulagi was one of the first major Allied amphibious operations in the Pacific theater. Following its recapture, the island became a significant base for PT boats and naval repair facilities. Today, Tulagi is a quiet settlement known for its colonial-era ruins and world-class diving sites featuring wartime shipwrecks in the surrounding waters. It remains a poignant reminder of the shift from colonial rule to the intensity of World War II combat.
